Chesnut Haiku and Quixotic Birds
April 20th, 2007
Chesnut Haiku
Twisted, hulking branch,
Spiders towering above,
A lonely monster.
Quixotic Birds
Fluttering around, nest building, busy in the tree.
They must worship and idolize the tree, the tree is their king.
All life is the tree, they are the tree.
Any tree is soon the best tree, is soon their God.
Quixotic Birds.

Your chestnut haiku evoked some interesting images in the 17 syllables. Though I was little confused as to whether the ‘lonely monster’ of the last line was referring to the branch or the tree. Haiku
I felt your ‘Quixotic Birds’ poem developed a powerful idea very effectively - the tree as the king/God of birds really gets me thinking. It reminds me of an old Greek philosopher who said the God of horses was a horse.
But you emphasise that they are quixotic birds, flitting between trees as maybe the rest of us do between idols. A very provocative poem, well done.
