The Flat
January 30th, 2008
It was a bare flat, scruffy and dirty, but two things stood out the most: a massive TV set and a sparkling 24 carat gold watch. Hanging on the wall was a lottery ticket saying, “Winner!” Beside it was a picture of a man getting a seven million pound cheque.
The light was flickering on and off. The battered door hung off its hinges, making a creaking noise, and a horrible smell wafted in from the kitchen. In the kitchen, the blackened stove was still on, burning little bits of meat inside.
Through a crack in a broken cupboard door there was a half-open box. Gleaming jewellery hung out of it. Next to the cupboard a calendar was pinned to the wall, and the date of the sixth of August was circled with a red marker pen, and inside it said, “Friend’s stag night party.”
On the scratched dining table there was a colourful brochure about how to drive a Ferrari, and beside it there were papers waiting to be signed, with a credit card lying on top.
A hole in the ceiling dripped water onto the stove, making a sizzling noise, and upstairs a banging noise came from the bathroom. Inside the bathroom a man was bound to pipes, muttering the word, “Help!” repeatedly, and a crowbar lay beside him.
He was a young man of about 24, dressed in smart leather shoes, a blazer, striped tie, black trousers, and a belt with a shiny, golden buckle. A cold draught blew in through the open window and the sound of a police siren in the distance was getting louder and louder.

Hmmm… quite a mystery.
It seems to me that the young man in the bathroom was recently not very well off (which is why the flat is bare and scruffy). But he became very rich by winning the lottery which is why he has jewellery, a big tv and is considering buying a Ferrari.
Maybe some nasty villains knew of his new-found wealth and tied him to up to rob his flat. Maybe they knew about the stag party they thought he’d be going to.
I like the way the place tells the story… and I’d love to discover the solution to the mystery.
