Reading Bus

Reading Bus Programme
August 2010 - June 2011

The Reading Bus operates in schools within the St Machar, Northfield and Torry Communities. The Reading Bus also has events in the community and in schools outwith the three regeneration areas. Occasional journeys are also made to work in Aberdeenshire and further afield.

Some of the activities that we offer are:

Millie Tour
Following the launch of Millie, our Doric picture book by Sheena Blackhall, schools will each have at least one day of The Reading Bus. Sheena will be onboard to welcome classes and read her book as well as sharing the many resources developed to complement the resource.

Reading for Families
All schools will be involved in organising literacy events for families with a free book going home with each child involved. Schools can choose to target Primary One or Nursery Classes.

Jackanory
One class in each school will work with a storyteller to read aloud a picture book / story - in a "Jackanory" style. Classes will have three sessions with a storyteller as well as support from class teacher. Classes will be encouraged to share their readings with younger classes and if possible at a community event. Librarians will support these sessions where possible. This will culminate in a literacy event for all involved in May 2011 with Michael Rosen.

Film Animation
One class in each school will work on a film animation project based on a book. This will begin with a CPD twilight session for teachers in September and culminate with a series of film festivals in May 2011. This work is supported by Apple Education; The Reading Bus is a Regional Training Centre for Apple. Funding from TAQA Bratani Ltd allows a team of artists to work with the classes in each schools.

Reading Radio
Our dedicated full time radio worker, Rich Langham, will work with Primary 7 classes to broadcast Reading Radio on SHMU 99.8 FM. This will include some after school clubs and involvement, where possible, in summer camps at academy. Every week a new radio show is broadcast live on SHMU 99.8 FM on Thursday from 11am - 12 noon. This work is in partnership with Station House Media Unit with funding from Children in Need.
